Founder & CEO
About the founder
After spending over a decade in talent development leadership roles at Fortune 500 companies and consulting organizations — and working with a wide variety of leadership development vendors — Nathan Magnuson launched Leadership-in-a-Box® to meet the growing demand for a “ridiculously practical” off-the-shelf program solution that addressed the needs of each person involved in the development process.
Our growing Leadership-in-a-Box® team has many decades of experience in facilitation, instructional design, content authoring, video production, consulting, coaching and tech-enabled learning.
In many ways, Leadership-in-a-Box® is the antithesis of most leadership solutions, created by academics and pitched by sales teams, none of whom have actually delivered enterprise programming solutions themselves. Conversely, Leadership-in-a-Box® was created by talent practitioners for both talent practitioners and everyday leaders alike, and we’ve quickly earned the trust of clients ranging from small teams creating their first-ever internal leadership development program to Fortune 500 companies.

FAQs
In many, many ways! Here are just a few: enterprise-wide development initiatives, specific signature programs, regional or business unit-specific priorities, cohort-based programs, open-enrollment
development opportunities, annual conferences, executive retreats, in-person sessions, virtual sessions, video-based programs, etc. Our programs can be used to quickly build and deploy an organization’s new (or first) leadership development program, to refresh an existing program or a number of additional ways we’d be happy to explore with you!
Most clients have at least one primary focus for Leadership-in-a-Box® and one or multiple secondary purposes.
Leadership-in-a-Box® launched with a strong focus on healthcare as Nathan Magnuson sought to help struggling hospital leaders with very limited availability who needed practical guidance they could use with their teams right away.
While our first set of clients came from healthcare, we quickly added many other industries – retail, insurance, senior care, construction, architecture, industrial supply to name a few, and many others we’re currently in partnership discussions with.
Leadership-in-a-Box© has been delivered successfully to all levels of our client organizations, from executive to frontline staff.
Our relationship is typically “owned” by the head of talent or learning (if the client organization has a specific team for this). Otherwise, it may be a senior leader within HR (who is responsible for leadership development support) or for smaller organizations it may be a member of the senior executive team
who is sponsoring a new leadership initiative.
In other cases, if there is a special need (like a leadership event or specific intervention), we may work directly with the head of a particular department or an administrative leader.
All of our content is 100% original and is based on the latest research trends, industry best practices, and decades of firsthand experience creating and delivering leadership development to solve the challenges of everyday leaders in organizations just like yours- all designed within a “ridiculously practical” program framework.
We’re happy to have this conversation with you! It’s best to start with your goals, challenges, and priorities. We can also share our most popular programs as well as which topics seem to work best for clients with similar goals and initiatives as yours.
Our five most popular programs are: Accountability, Engaging & Retaining Teams, Difficult Conversations, Leading Change and Time Management & Productivity.
We’re so excited about our video programs! Each one contains 2- to 3-minute micro videos (and a workbook, action plan and assessment) containing a condensed version of the same content from theworkshop programs. So far, our clients have used them as additional reinforcement for the workshops, deployed to large groups who don’t have access to workshops, to immediately address important ad hoc priorities or provide as an individual self-paced development opportunity.
We work closely with each new client partner to select the program topics that best accomplish the primary initial needs, realizing our clients may need to adjust the topic mix or deployment approach as things progress.
We also share best practices from other clients in similar situations, which topics tend to be most popular and how different topics pair together. For instance, if you plan to deploy both “Difficult Conversations” and “Accountability.” always deploy “Accountability” first because it’s all about setting clear expectations, which is the basis for about 80% of all difficult conversations!
We also provide quarterly consultations to share additional input, guidance, or encouragement as needed for the initiatives to be successful.
Yes! In fact “certification” is a bad word in our company! In our own experiences working with other training vendors, certification requirements often resulted in high additional client costs and limited access to programming for the purpose of protecting the “integrity” of the content – none of which served client organizations looking for a “ridiculously practical” partnership, program, and pricing option.
Our programs are carefully designed so that “amateur” facilitators or amateurs in a particular subject matter can competently and confidently facilitate a successful workshop with very little preparation up front, whether they’re members of the learning team, HR, educators, or simply gung-ho team leaders.
About half of our clients request a train-the-trainer session as part of the onboarding process and each one has reported they were glad they did. Occasionally we’ve even provided 1:1 coaching prep for critical high visibility programs. We’re happy to find the solution that works best for your team but we will never require you to pay extra to certify a limited number of internal facilitators.
It’s simply an enterprise license model where you pay one price and everyone has access. There are no “per class” or “per user” costs. Whether you deploy a program once or a hundred times throughout the year, it’s the same price. This encourages maximum participation, which translates to maximum performance improvement for the organization.
Many training vendors’ pricing options include multiple recurring costs between facilitator training, certification, content licensing, and materials. (We know because members of our team have been certified with these organizations!) This results in much higher than anticipated client costs that limit access and utilization. Often leadership teams need to make tough decisions about who can participate in “leadership development” and who can’t simply based on cost. Simply put, we hate this approach to pricing. It’s the opposite of a “ridiculously practical” model and doesn’t serve the needs and priorities of our clients.
Yes – depending on your organization’s specific needs, there is essentially a
“small, medium or large”option. The best part is you can switch between options (and topic mix) from year to year as your needs, team composition and priorities shift!
Yes! We are available to facilitate Leadership-in-a-Box® programs virtually or in-person as needed. Additionally, Nathan Magnuson is a popular speaker on leadership and engagement at conferences, corporate events, and executive retreats (as are several members of our facilitation team) and would be happy to support you.
